Robert Mahar is a designer and maker who develops and teaches imaginative crafts and clever do-it-yourself projects through high-quality video tutorials and in-person workshops. The crafty content he develops and presents to his CreativeLive and YouTube viewers, online audience and workshop attendees is often rooted in nostalgia, and his talent for reinventing old-school crafts with a decidedly modern twist has gained him a loyal following.
With an education in studio arts and art history, he has worked in a variety of creative fields including 13 years as an appraiser of modern and contemporary art. When he’s not working in his downtown Los Angeles studio, Robert obsesses over vintage craft books and schemes ways to make it big as a doughnut connoisseur.
If you head over to Robert's website you'll see a wide array of classes he teaches:
We are SO excited to have Robert in the studio this weekend for his Surprise Balls Workshop! Sign up for it HERE.
Looking for the ultimate holiday party favor, stocking stuffer or festive family fun activity? Join LA based designer and maker Robert Mahar in creating old-school surprise ball party favors dressed up as super-sized candy!
Create the perfect gift for your favorite kid (big or little!) this holiday season and rediscover the fun of a vintage craft last popularized in 1950s America. Surprise balls consist of small treats and trinkets, jokes and candies artfully concealed in hundreds of feet of crepe paper streamers.
This is a beginners class – no experience needed. All children to be accompanied by an adult. All tools and materials will be provided. Robert will provide a sweet selection of kawaii and vintage inspired items to include in your surprise balls (enough for everyone to complete at least three!) but if there are specific, small scale items you’d like to use, please feel free to bring them with you (think tiny charms, novelty jewelry, stickers, notes on paper, little hard candies, etc.)
